How to Avoid Road Trip Disasters This Summer

June 24, 2026

The bags are packed, the hotel is booked, and you have finally curated the perfect highway playlist. You can practically taste the roadside snacks and feel the vacation breeze. There is nothing quite like the excitement of a summer road trip. But if you have ever found yourself standing on the shoulder of an interstate in ninety-five-degree heat waiting for a tow truck, you know that a mechanical breakdown can turn a dream vacation into a stressful financial nightmare in a matter of minutes.

At Dub's Garage, the weeks leading up to summer are always our busiest time of year. We see two types of customers. Those who bring their vehicles in early for a quick checkup to ensure smooth sailing, and those who get towed into our bays midway through their trip because a totally preventable issue gave out. We want you to be in that first group. To help you stay on the road and out of our waiting room this summer, we have put together a professional pre-trip checklist from the mechanic's perspective.

The Hidden Stress of Summer Driving

Many drivers assume that winter is the hardest season on a car, but summer heat can actually be much more brutal on your vehicle's vital components. Driving at highway speeds for hours on end with the air conditioning blasting puts an incredible amount of stress on your engine cooling system, your battery, and your tires.

When you add the extra weight of luggage and passengers, small weaknesses in your vehicle that went unnoticed during short grocery store runs can quickly escalate into major failures under pressure.

The Essential Pre-Trip Hit List

You do not need to do a full engine overhaul before you leave, but focusing on these key areas will eliminate the vast majority of common roadside breakdowns.

  • The Cooling System Check: Your engine cooling system is your first line of defense against the summer heat. If your coolant is low or old, your engine can overheat quickly, especially when climbing long hills or sitting in highway traffic. We look for cracked hoses, leaking water pumps, and a radiator fan that spins at full speed.
  • Tire Pressure and Tread: Heat causes the air inside your tires to expand. If your tires are already under-inflated or have worn-out tread, that extra heat and pressure can cause a sudden blowout. Check your pressure when the tires are cold, and do not forget to check the air in your spare tire too.
  • The Battery Test: Extreme heat is actually worse for a car battery than freezing cold. It evaporates the internal liquids and speeds up corrosion. A battery that started your car just fine in the spring can completely die on the hottest afternoon of the year without warning.
  • Brakes and Suspension: Stopping a heavy, fully loaded vehicle from seventy miles per hour requires plenty of healthy friction material. If your brake pads are thin or your rotors are warped, the extra heat generated during a long descent down a mountain pass can cause severe brake fade.

Don't Forget the Basics of Comfort

A road trip disaster isn't always a blown engine. It can also be a cabin that feels like a sauna. Your air conditioning system works much harder during a long road trip than it does on your daily commute. If your A/C feels a little weak now, it will likely give out completely when you are stuck in traffic under the blazing afternoon sun.

It is also smart to swap out your cabin air filter before you leave. A clean filter ensures maximum airflow and keeps road dust, pollen, and highway exhaust fumes out of your lungs while you drive.

The Golden Rule of Timing

The single biggest mistake we see people make is bringing their car into the shop the day before they are scheduled to leave. If we find a bad wheel bearing, a leaking radiator, or an oil leak that requires ordering a special part, your entire trip schedule gets thrown out the window.

Give yourself and your mechanic a buffer zone. Bring your car in for a checkup at least one or two weeks before your departure date. This gives you plenty of time to address any surprise issues without having to reschedule your hotel reservations or stress out on your final days of packing.

Let Dub's Garage Be Your Co-Pilot

We want you to focus on making memories, not calling roadside assistance. Our team is here to give your vehicle a comprehensive bumper-to-bumper inspection before you hit the highway. We will check all your fluids, test your battery, evaluate your brakes, and make sure your cooling system is fully prepared to handle whatever the summer weather throws your way.
