Coolant Levels and Transmission Leaks

Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for car owners to come into repair shops with severe leaks from around the front seal area of their transmission. The fluid pours out so fast you’d think the front seal popped out.

Then, once the car sits and cools off, the leak goes away… until it heats up again.

Would you believe the problem is being caused by low engine coolant in the radiator? It’s true. Here’s what happens:

During normal driving, the transmission gets hot just like the engine. To cool the transmission, the fluid is directed through a cooler that sits inside the radiator.

When the engine cooling system is working properly, the engine coolant passes over the transmission cooler in the radiator. This allows the heat from the transmission to transfer to the coolant, and then be carried away to the outside air.

But if the engine coolant level is low, the coolant won’t immerse the transmission cooler properly. So the cooler won’t release the heat necessary for the transmission to cool off.

The heat continues to increase in the transmission, causing parts to expand and pressures to build. Eventually, the pressure pushes the oil past the expanding front seal, causing a leak that’d make Niagara Falls proud. Then, once the unit cools back off, the leak seals up… until the next time the car heats back up.

The fix? Add coolant to the radiator. That takes care of the problem… at least, on the short term. Of course, you may still have some type of leak in the cooling system. You should have that checked and repaired, to protect both the engine and the transmission.

Curb Your Embarrassment

We’ve all done it. Misjudged the distance from car to the sidewalk and – bam! Slamming your car into a curb one or two times can’t cause that much damage, right? Actually – it can.

While it may seem like an insignificant occurrence, hitting a curb can potentially cause issues for your vehicle. Do not ignore it and cross your fingers that nothing was *too* damaged.

One impact you could soon notice is your tire performance. Even when you hit a curb going just 5-10 miles per hour the effects can be felt. Drive as few as 200 miles and you may begin to feel the real impact of the damage done when you slam into something. So what can happen to your car when you bump that curb?

In addition to your tires performing differently, your car’s tie rods are likely to be damaged. These rods connect the wheels to the steering system so you may notice a difference in how well the steering wheel responds as you use it. It’s likely that you’ll first notice this in poor conditions like wet roads.

Another mechanism within your car that may be affected are the control arms – they enable the up-and-down motion of the suspension system, and help keep axles firmly in place. Shaking this system loose by bumping into a curb can mean big problems for your suspension. Your car’s steering knuckles could also be damaged (another element of your car’s suspension that aids your ability to steer).

The most obvious place you may notice damage is on your tires and/or wheels. If there’s an obvious gash in the rubber or on the hubcap, or the tires look as if they’ve lost pressure, play it safe and drive to an auto repair shop to have it checked out. Ignoring any early red flags could mean expensive repair work later.

It’s important to make sure that your alignment wasn’t knocked askew by any number of run-ins with curbs. An alignment inspection is not expensive, and can prevent your having to spend more on costly repairs down the road.

What Causes Steering Wheel Vibration

On good road surfaces around Corpus Christi, cars are meant to drive smooth and steady. However, most people have experienced steering wheel vibrations at one time or another. Car parts can break or fail after continued use, and it’s not uncommon for car components to need to be replaced.

Top Causes For Steering Wheel Vibration

Because your steering wheel is your connection to both your car and the road, your first indication that something is not right with your vehicle may be noticed first through the steering wheel. The top reasons for a steering wheel shaking while driving are:

Tires – Because the steering wheel is used to direct the wheels, tires that are out of balance are likely to manifest signs here first. With this problem, you are more likely to feel the shakes at higher speeds than lower ones. Furthermore, make sure all four tires are properly inflated, especially with larger tires, as a deflated tire can cause a steering wheel to shake. Also, rotate your tires if you start to notice more wear on one side.
Wheel Areas – Another culprit could be the wheels themselves. While wheel bearings could last you a lifetime, sometimes they wear out or get damaged. Replacing them will solve this problem.

Tie rods and ball joints can become problematic as well. If your car shakes only when you’re turning corners, your tie rods might be bad. If it shakes only while driving straight, it is likely the ball joints.

3. Brakes – Malfunctioning brakes can cause violent shaking through the steering wheel when you try to slow down or stop, indicating that the rotors might be warped or worn out. While you can try skimming the brakes, you may have to have them replaced.

4. Axle – If your car has been in an accident recently and you’re noticing vibrations, your car’s axle may have gotten bent or damaged. In this case, the faster you go, the more your steering wheel will shake, but the shaking will still be there no matter what speed you drive. If the steering wheel randomly jerks to the right or left, it could be a red flag that your driveshaft is damaged. Avoid driving your car and have it towed to a reputable mechanic to be fixed immediately.

5. Engine – Any problems that cause your engine to shake will most likely be felt throughout the entire car, but you will feel it most in the steering wheel. While this is rare, these distinct vibrations can occur if there are problems with fuel delivery, air induction, or spark-related issues.
